Korean Pine

The Korean Pine is a beautiful, long-lived coniferous tree native to northeastern Asia. It is prized for its large, edible pine nuts, which are among the largest produced by pine species. The pine nuts are rich, oily, and robust in flavour, making Korean Pine an excellent choice for edible landscapes, food forests, and long-term nut-producing plantings.

Korean Pine is a relatively slow grower during its early years while establishing its root system. Young trees are naturally shade tolerant and can benefit from protection from intense sun, particularly during their first 5 years. Our seedlings are between 2-3 years old.

Patience is important when growing Korean Pine for nuts. Trees may begin producing cones in roughly 12–20 years, with the latter more likely in Zone 3 climates. Cones are large sized and mature during their second year of growth, ready to harvest from late September through mid-October.

With sufficient space and suitable growing conditions, Korean Pine develops into a large, beautiful conifer tree and can provide edible pine nuts for many years to come. Trees in the wild are known to grow for hundreds of years.

Growers Note: Korean Pine has long been known to have difficulties in transplanting. For best results try planting in well-drained sandy acidic soils. Alternatively, collect soil from locations where pines grow naturally and add it to the planting hole. Our trees have been inoculated to help the tree better adapt to the transplanting process.
